Can cataracts grow back after cataract surgery?

After successful cataracts surgery some people may develop the symptoms they originally complained about when they had cataracts. Leaving them wondering “Have my cataracts grown back?”

No, cataracts cannot grow back once removed. However some people may develop symptoms that are similar to those of a cataract, such as blurry or hazy vision, difficulty reading regular print and sensitivity to bright lights and glare after their surgery.

These symptoms may gradually appear over time after the cataract surgery.

These symptoms are due to some cloudiness developing in the capsule or bag that holds the artificial lens (IOL) in place. This may develop in up to 25% of operated eyes. This bag is left intact at the time of surgery as it holds the IOL in place to allow proper focusing. However, as time goes on after the surgery cloudiness may occur here in this capsule and symptoms similar to the initial cataract may develop. This is not a “second cataract” as it is sometimes referred to but is called ‘poster capsular opacification’.

Fortunately, this is a treatable in office procedure. It requires eye drops and the use of a laser. The procedure is painless and takes about 5 to 10 minutes. You can return home the same day.

It restores clear vision almost immediately with little to no downtime.
